The Perils of Empire-Americans Run Amok in Iraq

The occupation of Iraq started with the CPA making a law that did not allow Americans to be legally responsible for any crimes they committed while in Iraq. Order 17 originally was intended to prevent Iraqis from prosecuting Americans and because of that contractors like Blackwater especially, have run roughshod over Iraqis and their practically non-existent judicial system, committing and getting away with mass murder. Americans tended to look the other way while all this was done in their name.

Now comes word that another US contractor has committed serious crimes in Iraq, but this time against American citizens. The obscenity of war is no more apparent than in Iraq where US citizens have been treated as objects of conquest.

"On my way into the office, there was pictures of prostitutes and animals having sex pasted in the hallway," she said. "Our office was just wallpapered with pornography. There was not one space of wall at all."

Barker said she inquired from her male co-worker where her workplace was located.

"My co-worker told me that, 'You can either sit at the end of my desk or on the floor, because that's where the women sit that work with me,'" Barker said.

When Tracy tried to report the co-worker to her manager, she said the manager's gestures towards her only got worse.

"If I don't feel safe, I can come to his room and get a backrub or sleep with him," Barker said she was told.

What's surprising is the Bush Administration's response to these claims. His Justice Department has refused to investigate KBR, (why should anyone be surprised), leaving it up to a weakened Congress to demand justice for US citizens, something Congress hasn't shown any interest in doing for anyone at anytime in recent history. What's equally troubling is, it appears US citizens do not have recourse to the law for crimes committed against them in Iraq by other Americans! Wasn't that the main reason why it was invaded by US forces in the first place, to restore law and order? Stay tuned.
